What is the Sendai Framework?

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR) is a 15-year, voluntary, non-binding instrument which recognizes that the State has the primary role to reduce disaster risk but that the responsibility should be shared with other stakeholders including local government, the private sector and other stakeholders. It aims for “the substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries”. The SFDRR is the successor instrument to the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2005-2015 and is the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda, with seven targets and four priorities for action.

The Gravitazz Sendai Workshops is a string or workshops organised by Gravitazz Institute . The workshops target Sub-Saharan African countries and aimed at supporting country stakeholders in integrating the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction into their national policies and programmes.

The workshop will allow participants to:

• Receive a practical understanding of the SFDRR and related instruments (e.g. 2016 Mauritius Programme of Action, African Union Strategy for DRR);

• Reflect on national policies, framework and strategies, and how they can be effectively aligned to the SFDRR in order to achieve the goals and targets set for 2030;

• Learn about the importance of data and monitoring of the Sendai targets through relevant existing indicators;

• Highlight the links between the SFDRR and other global instruments and frameworks related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to Climate Change Adaptation.

How to Organise a Sendai Workshop in your Country?

Gravitazz organises Sendai workshops upon request, in partnership with National and Local Governments of the African Continent, so as to ensure that they receive credit from the organisation of the workshop and spearhead efforts towards effective Disaster Risk Reduction in nationally and locally, hence contributing to building a disaster-prepared continent. These practical workshops typically last 3 days and can be organised in partnership with other organisations such as UN agencies and CSOs. They are organised in-country.

• 800 USD (includes: facilitation costs, course materials, certificates, venue and catering as well as other administrative costs);

• 650 USD (applicable should your organisation organise and cover catering and venue costs).
