EL NIÑO 2026/27: AFRICA’S NEXT PREPAREDNESS TEST

DIMA CONNECT | ISSUE 11 — 27 OCTOBER 2026

As African countries prepare for the 2026/27 climate season, this week’s DIMA Connect examines the implications of evolving El Niño outlooks for disaster preparedness, anticipatory action and the governance of cascading risks. Seasonal forecasts are a call to plan and act—not predictions that every community will experience the same impacts.

The edition highlights the SADC Regional Disaster Preparedness and Response Planning Workshop held in Johannesburg on 20–23 October, where three regional preparedness instruments were technically validated for further consideration. It also reflects on the DMISA Conference in Centurion, where community risk management and institutional positioning featured prominently in discussions of disaster risk governance.

Across its pan-African and global scan, Issue 11 covers early warning, regional institutions, disaster risk financing, practitioner questions, events and learning, and professional opportunities.
